40's..Is it me? or CBH (crazy bitch hormones)
There is something that happens in a women after she hits the magical number of 40. She enters a new era where her body and emotions shift and seem to go in completely different directions. For a lot of women/moms, this uncertainty or unawareness can lead to a feeling of being overloaded and make one go insane. After discussing this topic with numerous women, I am finding the following scenario most common today:
After a hectic start to the day, you manage to get the kids off to school and you're already exhausted. You grab your 2nd cup of coffee and off to work you go. After a full day of work, you come home only to take the kids to their activities, make dinner, and help with homework. You then manage to grab a glass of wine to settle down or perhaps take your anti-depressant because you are so overwhelmed and have had no time to yourself to decompress. Perhaps, you take your happy pill in the morning and make it through the day numb, emotionless and drained. Nonetheless, you know you will make it through the day...usually joyless.
Day after day, month after month you seemingly are getting fed up with the routine and continue on. Now, stage left, you add in your monthly cycle.. You notice that is has been off lately, and you are starting to notice symptoms: irregular menses, headaches, bloating, irritability, gaining weight and you lack patience (similar to a toddler wanting a toy at a toy store)... You need it, want it and have to get it done NOW! Your PMS is out of control, your barking at everyone and you start to wonder: is this really my life? is there something out there better than this?
Another scenario looks like this: My life is constantly busy but I am content. My family is good, I like my job, my marriage is good, everything is ok... then, why am I such a bitch? why do I turn from "I am grateful" to a raging lunatic crazy mom in a matter of minutes. What's going on?
The answer is.... it's your hormones. When you are a teenager a shift happens after you enter puberty and your hormones are on the incline. This is why teenagers act out, get withdrawn and are unreasonable. When we are in our 20's and 30's (child bearing years), we hit a plateau and your hormones balance out (of course, with the exception of pregnancy). Now, when you hit 40, your hormones are on the decline and you quickly lose that balance which has to do with the entire endocrine system in particularly estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. This is when the crazy bitch comes out because you are so busy you have no time to figure out what's wrong, all you know is that your world is out of control.
Most get to the point where all seems hopeless and they don't want to feel like this anymore. It is effecting your marriage, your family life, your job and you are just not "you" anymore. You go to the doctor who offers you some birth control to regulate your cycle, some anti-depressants for your mood and you go home and crack open the bottle of wine and convince yourself that "everything's going to be ok!"
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS! there are alternatives out there if you do the research and be your own advocate. Don't listen to others who say "it is what it is" or " it's going to get worse"... you don't have to suffer.
First, step back and look at your lifestyle...what are your priorities? what are your major stressors? research good healthy food options, take supplements, get some exercise and go to your doctor and get a female comprehensive hormone panel blood test done. Once you have that baseline test in your hands you can seek alternative doctors who can help. You can seek advice from a holistic doctor, a nutritionist or a doctor that specializes in Bio-Identical hormones (BHRT). These types of doctors are trained to look at your results as well as your lifestyle and will tell you what you need to do to balance out. Maybe it's your diet, maybe you have to much on your plate and stress is causing a lot issues and totally disrupting your system. Regardless, becoming a customer of the pharmaceutical industry will only mask your symptoms and will NEVER address the root cause. Most likely you will get a pill to address a current symptom and then turn around and get another symptom from that and so on. In the end, you will become a customer and still feel like crap.
If you feel stuck and stressed in certain areas in your life such as: career, relationships or purpose, you can hire a life coach or do a combination of both (coach and alternative medicine). The 40's are supposed to be a great time to BE living and finding your creativity, spark and purpose. You don't have to suffer. After all those years of doing for everyone it is time to take back you, and feel great... YOU DESERVE IT!...
